Editor's Review of Ancestry.com

Ancestry.com is the biggest online genealogy website. From this website you can access millions of records and connect with thousands of other genealogists and hobbyists researching their ancestry. They have transcribed documents, scanned images and hundreds of tools and ideas to keep your genealogy search going.

Searching for your ancestors online is a lot easier now with the technology at Ancestry.com. Putting in simple parameters of names and dates will a high number of results to search through. You can collect and store the results you are interested in, to be studied later. The interface is fairly easy to operate and they are GEDCOM compliant, which means you can upload your current genealogy files onto their database.

Pros

  • 14 day Free Trail lets you dig into their files and decide if the service is right for you.
  • Huge numbers of records in digital images, transcriptions and uploaded data from other subscribers.
  • Search census records, military records and every other type of record you can think of by just typing in a name.
  • Verify dates, names and states for known relatives and ancestors.
  • Find the names and occupations of unknown ancestors too.
  • View scanned images of original documents online to see the information for yourself.
  • Even if you’ve started your tree in a GEDCOM, you can easily upload it into the Ancestry.com database.
  • If you start your family tree on Ancestry.com, the site will automatically search for documents with your family’s names

Cons

  • The site is quite pricey. $13.00/month for the US Deluxe Membership and $25.00.month for the World Deluxe Membership, plus additional costs for other data bases not included in the two main memberships.
  • For some people, there might be too much information at once. A simple search for one name could pull up thousands of documents to sort through.
  • Once you upload your information, you can’t download it. This I found surprising.

Overall

Finding all the information you need on one website is worth the fee. Ancestry.com is the biggest and the best genealogy website out there. And they are adding more data to their system everyday.

Buy a Membership
By Gwen on November 3, 2009

"I’ve been researching my family history for years, but when I signed up and started their free trial, I knew I was going to buy a membership. In the first few minutes of searching, I came across so many records that had valuable information about my family. So I bought a year’s subscription and have been finding great information on Ancestry.com ever since. I especially like the forums and meeting up with other people searching the same branch of the family."

Worth the price
By Elizabeth on October 29, 2009

"Finding all those records conveniently in one place was well worth the price of the subscription. I bought the world deluxe and it’s been worth every penny."

Faster Research
By Gilbertha on April 17, 2009

"This is such a good website. I’ve been a genealogist for a few years and I’ve been researching my family and others. I know you can find all these resources for free, but you have to either travel there to read it, or search for hours to get just the resource you want, or worse yet, you think you find it, but it turns out it’s only an index, no real documents to look at. Ancestry.com has gathered all those hard to find resources and put it into one easy to use format. Now the research that used to take a long time can be done much faster. "

Found Great Grandparents
By Debbie on April 7, 2009

"Ancestry.com has helped my find my grandfather’s birth parents. All I had was a few facts and a lot of rumors. When I joined Ancestry.com I started to ask questions in the forums and I found out that there were two other people researching the same family tree. They had lots of information about my great grandparents and I was able to fill huge gaps in my family tree."
