There’s nothing more unsightly than sympathy flowers wilting around a casket during the funeral service or visitation. To avoid this it is imperative to send sympathy flowers that are durable and appropriate for such an occasion. This can sometimes prove difficult, as climate, venue, and the distance traveled by the flowers you send can cause them to wilt prematurely. Some of the most attractive flowers can be quite delicate in nature, but one of the ways you can ensure that your arrangement will add a touch of elegance to an honorable occasion is to send durable sympathy flowers.
There are some guidelines you can follow to ensure you send the perfect sympathy flowers to the bereaved. These will be both beautiful and long-lasting, giving comfort to the grieving family while enhancing the atmosphere of a solemn circumstance. They are as follows:
Sympathy flowers with delicate, thin petals and stems will dry out rather quickly, and thus wilt before the ceremony is complete. Rather look for flowers with fleshy, thick petals that will hold up under high temperatures or dry environments. Lilies are perfect for this, and as they are white in color, represent peace, love, and tranquility. Marigolds and Dahlias also make excellent long-lasting sympathy flowers, as do Carnations. Lilies will last particularly long, and when combined with Bird of Paradise, make an elegant, attractive arrangement that will endure for weeks.
Fuller sympathy flowers will not wilt so quickly. Sending an array of Dahlias, Pom Poms, or Mums will provide the bereaved with a beautiful, durable arrangement containing an array of colors
In general, flowers that are still attached to stems or branches will last for an extended period of time as opposed to those that are not. An excellent example would be Peruvian Lilies or Cherry and Apple Blossoms. Both types of sympathy flowers make for a lasting bouquet, and are especially appropriate for funerals of children.
There are some very traditional sympathy flowers that also hold up well under various conditions. As previously mentioned; Carnations hold up quite well, while Daisies are also known to endure a bit longer than the average flower. There is an added bonus in that these sympathy flowers are less expensive as well. The best colors for Carnations are blue or dark red, while a bouquet of Daisies in a darker color such as purple or red makes an excellent arrangement.
There are some flower arrangements that you’ll want to avoid sending. These are sympathy flowers that don’t hold up well and wilt quite quickly. Roses will lose their petals very fast, while Forget-Me-Nots, though conveying an honorable sentiment, simply don’t last. If you like, you can purchase Forget-Me-Nots fresh on the day of the funeral, as they are quite appropriate to place on the grave. Irises are another to be avoided, as they too will not survive long enough.
Choosing sympathy flowers is a delicate endeavor, and of course you want to select an arrangement that will send a message of comfort, and enhance the service. If in doubt about the most appropriate and long-lasting arrangement to send, consult your florist or funeral home for recommendations. They are experienced and professional, and will be happy to help you select the perfect sympathy flowers to send.
