Sample Letter of Sympathy for a Grandmother

Dear Hannah,

I am so sorry for the loss of your grandmother. As her only granddaughter, you two must have had a special bond. I know you must miss her already!

I’ve known your grandmother since I was a child. She was my social studies teacher in the sixth grade. What a sweet lady she was—always full of vim and vigor and caring for other people. And we have enjoyed so much having her and your grandfather here in our church the past few years. Everyone here will certainly miss her, as well.

She used to talk about you all the time. I remember when she brought photos of you to church, right after you were born. And she always kept us up to date on your accomplishments as you’ve grown up. She was so proud of you.

I know how hard it is to let go of someone you love. You are never ready—regardless of that person’s age. But, in a way, you don’t have to let go, because you can always remember her. You must have some wonderful memories of your visits with her throughout the years. Don’t let these memories fade away. Talk about them with your family. Write about them. Tell your own children about them someday.

Remember that these next few weeks and months will be especially difficult for your mom, since she has lost such a wonderful mother. You are such a loving young lady, and I know you will be a great help to her. I’ve sent her a letter, too, but I wanted you to know that I am thinking about you, as well, as you grieve in your own way.

Your friend,

Marsha Watts
