Ancestors Search – Using Genealogical Societies in an Ancestors Search

If conducting an ancestors search, it’s a good idea to join a Genealogical Society. The perfect scenario would be to become a member of one in your area, but you can also join online as well. These specialized organizations have access to extensive catalogues of genealogical data, provide expert guidance for an ancestors search, and offer some camaraderie as well. There are often professional genealogists who are members of genealogical societies, and they are often most willing to offer their expertise to find ancestors. Let’s look at some of the genealogical societies around the world, and how they can help you in your ancestors search.

The National Genealogical Society (U.S.) and your Ancestors Search

The US National Genealogical Society was founded in 1903 in Washington D.C. Its mission statement says that its goal is "To serve and grow the genealogical community by providing education and training, fostering increased quality and standards, and promoting access to and preservation of genealogical records", and it does just that. Like all genealogical societies, this one is manned extensively by selfless volunteers who transcribe original documents, offer educational tutorials, and publish their own books and tutorials. You can become a member and begin your ancestors search by joining online. A year’s membership is US$60, and you can add an additional family member for $15.

The International Society for British Genealogy and Family History (ISBGFH) and your Ancestors Search

The ISBGFH has been helping people to find ancestors since 1979, and has a plethora of resources that can help you with an ancestors search. Anybody who is searching ancestors of British or Irish origin will benefit by becoming a member. Its tutorials are probably its most popular feature with members, and there are two ways you can receive personal instruction in searching ancestors. Members have the option of one-on-one personal training in person at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, or online with some of the most expert genealogy teachers in Britain. You can join online and membership is US$25 for North America, and US$30 for overseas members. They also offer full family Memberships and annual memberships for those who are serious about their ancestors search.

The Irish Genealogical Research Society (IGRS) and Your Ancestors Search

The Irish Genealogical Research Society was established in 1936 and has worked tirelessly to promote the study of Irish genealogy throughout the world. They have built up an extensive library of genealogical books and manuscripts during that time, all of which are fully accessible to members. The records represent all of Ireland’s social and religious groups, and offers fantastic research options to search ancestors who were Irish. This is another society you can join online and membership is the equivalent of US$40 per year.

If you’re serious about your ancestors search, you might want to consider joining either one of these major ones (they have the most extensive resources), or a local society in your area. The expertise offers by these organizations can be a great asset to your ancestors search, and help you to find ancestors that might otherwise be elusive.
